What to consider when migrating to public cloud
Over the last few years, we’ve seen the landscape evolve from organisations simply thinking about doing Cloud, to actively adopting it. Certainly, in the last 6-9 months, we’re hearing more and more organisations say, ‘If I don’t start to use cloud quickly, my competitors will’.
For the organisations that have already taken the leap, the reward is evident – from scalability and cost efficiency to higher application performance, there is clearly a lot to rave about. But migrating applications to the cloud is a complex process that requires both careful planning and deliberation.
Before you begin your adoption journey, it’s essential to consider all possibilities – both good and bad. Cloud migration issues, such as unexpected costs, interoperability, security gaps and unanticipated application rework, can create significant obstacles. So to help smooth a frequently bumpy path, you need to craft a well-thought-out migration strategy.
Whether you’re migrating to the cloud from an in-house environment or from one cloud to another, you need to understand the process and temper any excessive expectations. And, since not every application will benefit from the cloud, you need to be sure a migration is right for your organisation before diving in. It’s also important to learn from organisations’ that have either already adopted the cloud, or are well into their adoption journey’s.
At our recent Commercial Round table event, we spoke to a number of senior IT leaders to find out what they consider to be the main drivers behind the growing trend of Public Cloud adoption, how they are assessing which applications they should move into the cloud and how the operational shift can be managed effectively.
