ANS acquires Makutu to accelerate Data and AI innovation

ANS has announced the acquisition of Makutu, a Derby-based consultancy specialising in data engineering and advanced AI services and solutions. The move, which follows ANS’s 2022 acquisition of Dynamics 365 specialist Preact, strengthens its role in enabling organisations of all sizes across the UK embrace their data and implement artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly and effectively.

The deal, supported financially by Inflexion and Barings, brings Makutu’s 25-strong team of data architects, engineers and AI specialists into ANS, expanding its ability to design and deliver enterprise-grade data platforms that provide the foundation for safe and impactful AI adoption.

Founded in 2020, Makutu was recognised as one of the top five emerging data and AI scale-ups by independent research organisation Megabuyte in September 2025. It has deep expertise in Microsoft Fabric readiness, OneLake migration, predictive analytics and real-time IoT platforms. Its proven track record, spanning local government, housing, utilities and retail, amongst other sectors, complements ANS’s work helping public and private sector organisations modernise their data estates and unlock the value of AI.

Makutu’s Microsoft-first mindset aligns with ANS’s long-standing strategic partnership with Microsoft, further cementing its reputation as a partner of excellence across the full Microsoft ecosystem. Recognised as Microsoft Services Partner of the Year 2024, and with four Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals and more than 100 certified Microsoft specialists in its team, ANS provides customers with enhanced access to funding and technical resources.

Joining ANS’s team of more than 650 technology specialists and business experts provides Makutu with a platform to scale its thought leadership and specialist skills. ANS’s established client base and national sales network will create new opportunities for growth and innovation.

Richard Thompson, CEO at ANS, said: “Makutu’s expertise in data platforms, AI and IoT will enable us to accelerate our mission to make technology accessible and impactful for all organisations. Customers increasingly recognise that AI success depends on strong data foundations. With Makutu joining our team, we are in an even stronger position to help organisations across the UK prepare for that future.

This acquisition builds on the success of previous deals, including our acquisition of Dynamics 365 specialist Preact. It reflects our strategy of combining strong organic growth with selective M&A activity to create one of the UK’s leading Microsoft-focused digital transformation partners.

Simon Blewitt, CTO at Makutu, commented:Joining ANS gives our team the scale and reach to maximise what we do best – designing and delivering data and AI solutions that transform organisations. We are proud of the reputation we have built in the Microsoft ecosystem, and are looking forward to combining our innovation and technical depth with ANS’s national presence and strong community values.
